Air-filled tires are central to how Bumbleride strollers ride, and they prompt more questions than almost any other design choice. Here are the three we hear most, and the answers from our designer, Michael Downes behind our decision.
What was the thinking behind choosing air-filled tires, and how did the auto and bike industries influence that decision?
The pneumatic tire has lasted nearly 180 years because nothing has matched it. It debuted on bicycles, replacing the bone-rattling ride of the “boneshaker” and helping make cycling a practical way to get around. Cyclists proved that air delivers the cushioning, traction, and adaptability that varied surfaces demand, and the auto industry confirmed it at scale. Air was the proven choice.
How do air tires outperform PU or foam-filled wheels in real use, curbs, gravel, sand, and grass?
Air is a flexible cushion. It absorbs bumps and vibration before they reach the stroller and the person pushing it, for a smoother, more stable ride. It also conforms to uneven ground, keeping grip through turns and sudden stops over curbs, gravel, sand, and grass. Solid tires barely compress, so they pass impacts straight through and lose contact on loose or irregular terrain.
Why don’t all strollers use air tires if the push and ride are so much better?
Mainly size and convenience. Some designs, such as compact strollers, use wheels too small to come as pneumatic tires. Some manufacturers also choose solid tires for convenience, and as a hassle-free alternative. Neither drawback holds up well. Air tires are easy to pump and maintain and use standard children’s bike sizes, so replacements are available at any local bike shop. We believe the performance benefits of air tires are worth it!
The bottom line: air tires have earned their place over nearly 180 years by delivering a smoother, steadier, easier push on every surface. Their few drawbacks are easy to manage, which is why we build our strollers on air. Watch the video below and meet Michael!
